PrintVis Basics: Units Of Measure

To “tag” certain labor and material costs for later comparison and financial posting, we use the PrintVis Job Costing Units of Measure (aka PV Job Costing UOM).

By assigning the PV Job Costing UOMs to various labor operations and materials, we choose the degree of detail we want to see in our job costing report.

Settings in the PV Job Costing UOM control which costs we want to use (cost prices, self-costs and sales prices) and how each record is to be shown on the job costing report.

For example, here is the “Washup” PV Job Costing UOM card:

As we setup PrintVis, we make sure that all operations in our Calculation Units are linked to some sort of a PV Job Costing UOM:

Operations that are to be reported the shop floor are also linked to PV Job Costing UOMs.
That kind of setup is done on the Cost Center, under the “Shop Floor Job Ticket Tile Setup”:

In the screenshot below, both the estimated (red) and the actual (green) details end up on the job costing report, for us to review.

Sometimes, the operations we estimate are not exactly the same as the ones we report on the shop floor.

For example, in estimating, we may have these “makeready” operations calculated:

Operation namePV UOMCalculated time (hr)
Setup squeegee1000.25
Do a 1’st pull1000.1
Confirm Colors1000.15

However, on the shop floor, we may only want to report ONE operation:

Operation namePV UOMActual reported time (hr)
Makeready1000.4

All of these operations are still “routed” through the same PV Job Costing UOM #100.

It is important to link the same “kinds” of operations to the same “kinds” of PV Job Costing UOMs.
Otherwise, job costing reports may not be accurate.

For example, if we have something like this:

Estimating operations:

Operation namePV UOMCalculated time (hr)
Setup squeegee1000.25
Do a 1st pull1000.1
Confirm Colors1000.15

Shop floor operations:

Operation namePV UOMActual reported time (hr)
Makeready1000.4
Run1005

We now have a problem comparing “estimated” vs. “actual” costs...

Items (materials) are also linked to certain PV Job Costing UOMs, for the same reason: to compare the actual and the estimated + move the costs into corresponding financial journals.

The most common Item-related PV Job Costing UOMs are the “substrate” UOM #540 and the “ink” UOM #530.

For example, on this job costing report, you see the cost of items:

As we go through the system setup, we will be looking into all of the above in much more detail!
